I’ve been a Chicago Cubs fan since I was nine years old when my mother took me to my first game. Although I would not follow baseball for many years, The 2015 season brought me back to enjoying baseball and the 2016 World Series win just topped that. I only wish my mother would’ve been around to see that happen. This mural is on 16th Street west of Halsted .

Marlena

The recent murder of mother -to- be Marlena Ochoa was a vile and disgusting piece of news. Without getting into the gory details, I would like to hope that justice gets served for the three persons involved and may allow the family and friends of Marlena to take solace and try to move forward from this horrible event. This is a newly painted mural in her honor just west of Halsted on 16th. Street in Pilsen. RIP Marlena.

Carrera De Los Muertos is a 5k race that is held annually in Pilsen on or around Halloween. The United Neighborhood Organization (UNO) supports Hispanic communities by organizing events like this one as a catalyst to improve wellness and prosperity in neighborhoods such as Pilsen. Dia De Los Muertos (The Day Of The Dead) is annual holiday  celebrated in Mexico that is more of a celebration of life than a somber remembrance of the dead.

Jibarito Stop

While there are plenty of great food choices in Pilsen, there’s one place that I return to time and time again; The Jibarito Stop. It’s a family owned business and the food is incredible. Inside, nothing beats the community vibe, especially during the summer. One day while I was eating lunch, I looked up and saw this on the wall. The lighting at that moment was perfect. It’s story accurate.

The jibarito sandwich originated in Chicago. It is made with two fried plantains sandwiched together with chicken or steak then topped with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Especially good with a side of Arroz con gandules!

These are a couple more great murals that I found walking around Pilsen last year. There are some really incredible artists here. To cover these over should be a crime. These works of art really capture what Pilsen is all about.

The first in a series of photos I took while visiting Pilsen. I’ve been to this Near South Side  (of Chicago) neighborhood a lot recently. It’s rich with Mexican heritage. Murals are everywhere and they all tell stories and speak loudly.
